Rated 5 out of 5 by JackieG27 from SUPER HYDRATING This product made my skin feel refreshed + hydrated/dewy! I use this before I apply my moisturizer and once again after depending on how dry my skin is that day. The consistency is watery and turns cloudy when you rub with your hands but applies clear to the face. The scent is pleasant and clean. I put this in the fridge during the summertime so it felt nice and cool on my skin or I soak cotton pads with it and apply it like a mask. Overall, I do recommend anyone with dry skin to use this product the way I did before moisturizing, but if you have oily skin this can be used solo after cleansing and toning.

Rated 5 out of 5 by plewisca from Best thing I do for my skin I have used this product for about a year. I absolutely love it. I use it daily first then moisturize. It has a feeling like silk. I recently purchased 3 at a time because they are hard to find in the store. Love It!

Rated 5 out of 5 by Mature Vegan Woman from Great for dry skin on body :-) I bought three bottles of Hydrating Water Essence when it was on sale, keeping my fingers crossed that I would like this product. My face is oily and prone to breakouts, so I didn't plan to use it on my face. However, the skin on my legs is extremely dry, and the skin on the tops of my feet is so dry it peels. Before bed, I put generous amounts of Hydrating Water Essence on my legs and feet and allow it to soak in. Then I put either shea butter or coconut oil (or a combo of the two) on top to seal in the moisture and wear tight fitting pajama bottoms. In the morning, my skin is incredibly soft and moisturized! I sometimes use Hydrating Water Essence again after I shower, or skip this step and just use shea butter or coconut oil. I've found that adding Hydrating Water Essence to my dry skin routine has made my mature dry skin feel as soft and supple as a baby's bottom! And because all of elf's products are vegan and cruelty free, I don't have to research the ingredients before purchasing them.

Rated 5 out of 5 by jessicaann from this has CHANGED my skin!!! I have been using this for at least a month now, day and night. At first I was pouring some onto a cotton pad and applying that way but I felt that I was wasting a lot of product so I started just applying with my fingers and that works much better. This has made my dry/normal skin feel AMAZING and so hydrated and soft! This is the first product I have tried that has actually made my skin feel so soft! I can't stop using it! And only $10! I love it so much this is actually the first time I have ever felt compelled to leave a review on a product!

Rated 4 out of 5 by Kimmie B from Fresh and Moisturizing I love Hydrating Water Essence because it’s very hydrating and smells fresh. I don’t like the fact that it’s sticky until it dries. The way the product dispenses was a little wasteful until I figured out to be extra careful. Overall it’s an amazing light moisturizer, especially for summer.

Rated 2 out of 5 by Thebubble88 from Made my skin peel. I typically have liked most of the elf skincare products, but this didn’t work for me. I have combo skin, but the areas that are dry are super dry, so I thought this might help with that. The very first time I tried it it burned a little when I applied it, but I hoped it was just because my skin was so dry and sensitive in certain areas. However, when I woke up the next morning the dry patches where red and inflamed and the skin was literally peeling off, like when you get a slight sun burn and the skin starts to peel and flake as it heals. It smells really great and does have a nice cooling effect initially, and maybe my skin just didn’t react well to it, but I won’t be using it again!

Is this basically a toner?
An essence is a layering product that you put on after toner and before serums and moisturizer. A lot of the frustration I have with some of these reviews is that this is NOT meant to be a toner, nor a stand alone moisturizer. You use this in conjunction with your toner and moisturizer to deliver a more potent dose of beneficial skincare ingredients to the skin (in this case hydrating ingredients). The magic of essences is that you can choose a specific formula with particular ingredients to address specific skin issues that your other products can't address alone. Essences are your friend, buddy.

Mine just arrived. Should it look cloudy? Or have small items floating in it? (not air bubbles but something white).
It should look relatively clear in the bottle (considering, of course, that the bottle is frosted), especially when it's still. When you shake it, it looks like it has little air bubbles suspended in the esscence that can look white. When you pour some in your hand, however, it should be completely clear. If not, contact customer service and ask for a replacement.

Why is there fragrance in this? I was really excited to try it until I read the ingredient list. Fragrance does nothing for the skin and it stops a lot of people with sensitive skin from being able to use it.
I'm not certain why they chose to add fragrance, but it is rather unfortunate. It sill surprises me that there are people, even in the cosmetics industry, that don't understand that the ingredient "fragrance" is usually made up of many additional ingredients, any one of which could irritate sensitive skin. But sadly labeling laws allow companies to avoid listing the ingredients in their fragrances for proprietary reasons, which means that people with sensitive skin have no way of knowing if the product is actually safe for them to use. Hopefully elf will reconsider their decision to add fragrance to this product and change the formula. I'd rather deal with my products smelling weird than know that someone else could get hives just because they were looking for a good quality, inexpensive product.

So... when purchasing this product would I need to buy any other's that go with this or can it be used as a standalone moisturizer?
You will probably need another moisturizer since essences generally don't provide enough moisture to be used on their own. They are designed to lightly hydrate the skin before you apply your serums, that way you still get the benefits of the serum, but don't have to use as much of it. If you don't use a serum it might be better to just get one of the regular moisturizers. I'd also recommend putting this essence in a small spray bottle if you decide to get it. That will make it easier to apply and save you the trouble of using a cotton round. I hope this helps.

I already have (and love) the Soothing Serum. This product sounds similar in terms of what it does. Is this an alternative to that? If I used them both, which should be applied first?
Forget the word toner. Cleanse then a Hydrating Essence these have much more skin loving ingredients and helpful ones to fight free radicals the best and only time they can truly be absorbed is just after you've cleansed face slightly damp apply a few drops to a thin cotton pad press into skin I start at the apples of the cheeks the face shows the damage first and forehead then move the cotton pads along your face then discard. Never apply Essence with your hands ever it's wasteful and by doing so you changed how the product was ment to penetrate the layers of your skin. If you want the products to work use them correctly.

is this product cleanser? Moisturizer?? not sure what it is.
Hydrating Essence is the first thing you use after you have cleansed your skin, or after a double if had on make up apply a few drops to a thin cotton pad and press the pad into the skin and move all around your face I use two at the same time after you press the pad with the Hydrating Essence and release to move to another area you will feel like your skin has moisture and can breathe don't forget your neck and decolletage when rinsing your face before using do not rub hard or dry your skin simply start applying the Hydrating Essence then move to your eye area with the eye illuminating eye cream in circular motions apply around gently no tugging it's the skins turn to absorb the ingredients it may sound like a lot of time. I wash my face and/ or exfoliate the do the above, I grab the products I'm mentioning like the eye cream letting the Hydrating Essence fulling being absorbed then apply the Daily hydration moisturizer, allow to be absorbed, in the evening use the nourishing night cream mature skin and dry skin I also apply this after all the steps if I exfoliated I will apply another application before bed and the Sleeping Mask my face feels so soft. When I apply make up it doesn't fall into lines because there are none not any more. I have not committed in detail I have read alot of reviews. I also have an education for this purpose many people misdiagnosis their own skin. The E.L.F line of skincare Has been amazing for me and I have access to high end products and do you them. If you are wondering if that is the case why would I be looking or non the less purchasing a product from a grocery store. I know ingredients it just happened to be I was curious I noticed it stocked near some bath items and other natural products. I went to the check out it almost done and it would not scan by the way it was the Nourishing Night cream so I had a little more time to read all of it and for less than $10 I was eager to test my hypothesis. I was told since the product was new it wasn't in their system I begged from every angle I think of to take this home with me. I waited two days went back got it and during that time I looked up the company and was excited. I bought one of each I noticed a difference right away I do have trained hands but I just told any one who reads this how to do just that. Please don't be to quick to blame you had a hand in it too you did buy it. Use a very small amount if your skin is thirsting apply more after you have used these products you will notice you will use less than when used at your first purchase. I hope this helps I never go into detail or the talent of a professional but this should get you a good jumping off point.
